Sustainable Building Alliance 2014 Workshops and Seminars

We offer many different types of workshops and work parties in New Zealand. Browse down on this page to see what we have this year.

Strawbale Wall Raising Weekends in March and April

Both of our strawbale workshops are over and were fantastic!
We had a great time and all the participants worked so well - our thanks to all.

28-30 March 2014:  Motueka (Tasman District)
Three day workshops to teach you about stacking bales, making custom bales, wall preparation and plastering - start to finish, all in one weekend. These workshops are unique to cover all these aspects in one weekend. This house is in-fill strawbale but has lots of different types of strawbale on separate walls - so you will be able to see various methods all in one place. Registration fee $50.

11-13 April 2014:  Garston (Queenstown/Invercargill area)
Three day workshops to teach you about stacking bales, making custom bales, wall preparation and plastering - start to finish, all in one weekend. These workshops are unique to cover all these aspects in one weekend. This is an in-fill straw bale using a buck and beam frame. Registration fee $50.

Update April 20: Earth Plastering Weekend 25-26 April - Garston
We have a free plastering weekend coming up in Garston Friday and Saturday. If you would like to volunteer to help plaster contact the owners, Vicky and Simon Hodge on their cell phone: 021 464 533

It's a great opportunity to come out and practice applying earth plasters to strawbale. You can put it on with your hands or a trowel - it's easy and fun. Plastering your own home is a great way to save money and make your home construction more affordable. You will see how you and your friends can easily have a party during your plastering. Please call Vicky and Simon for more details.

Update: Our workshops on the Golden Bay house are over and the home is completed. We had a great time with over 60 people coming to help - some from Antarctica! We had several wonderful weekend wall raising workshops and a plastering party weekend. Everyone had a great time. Interior painting, plumbing and electrical work are being done and we expect to be completely finished in less than a month. You can see photographs of  construction in various stages of completion including interior earth plaster by clicking the following link:   More Construction Photos - Gallery

Come out to this free workshop and learn about earth plasters while plastering the inside of a real strawbale home. Learn how to mix and apply earth plasters using trowels and your hands. Everyone at our workshops has always enjoyed playing with the mud! Free lunch provided - bring a plate - so come and have fun at this day long plastering party! Update! A Great Success - everyone enjoyed getting muddy and we plastered all the walls planned - and then some more! Thanks to everyone who came for a job well done.
